Steve Surko — EMS Provider II, Charge Aide and Driver

Steve Surko is an EMS Provider II in Montgomery County. He joined the Glen Echo Fire Department in January of 2023, and since then, he has been checked off as a charge aide (A2) and driver (A1). Most recently, he reached his 1,000-service-hour milestone, demonstrating his dedication to the department and to his role as a volunteer EMT. Steve is an integral member of our department, and we are proud to highlight his accomplishments through the July Member of the Month spotlight!
Please introduce yourself.
Hi. I’m a semi-retired engineer. After a Naval career as a Surface Warrior and then as an Engineering Duty Officer in the Navy, I worked in industry and then returned to civil service at DHS Science & Technology and the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. Following retirement, I now work as a part-time building permit administrator for several local Montgomery County municipalities. I was inspired by my son, who served with Glen Echo FD as a high school student — and my uncle, who served as a lieutenant with NYFD — to challenge myself and volunteer in January 2023. It was a long journey to become an EMT – and eventually a Driver. It continues to be challenging and rewarding!
What is your favorite part of being an EMT/paramedic/firefighter?
My favorite part of being an EMT/Driver is helping people. It might seem routine to us, but it’s a bad day for the patient. I make an extra effort to engage with patients and family members to help put them at ease.
What is your favorite skill to perform/call type to respond to?
I’m an engineer, and enjoy the challenge of figuring out the fastest – and safest – way through traffic when driving Lights & Sirens.
Thank you, Steve, for your dedication and commitment to the department and community that we serve!
